Guardian Rumour Mill

Nick Miller

It’d be nice if people just got along, wouldn’t it? No arguments, no squabbles, no petty he-said-she-said stuff. A nice, peaceful world. Actually, what is the Mill saying – that would be awful. How tedious. A world without bickering? How would siblings spend their time? How would unhappily married couples express their profound dissatisfaction with their lot? How would neighbours communicate?

In that spirit, it’s nice to see Manchesters City and United at each other’s throats, scrapping over that most traditional of things, the transfer target. And in this case it’s a doozy, a whopper, a tussle of the first water, for City have apparently joined United in the chase for one Sergio Ramos. Whether it’s because they think they need another centre-back is unclear and frankly unimportant. In fact, the Mill hopes they don’t need him, that they’re just in the bidding to annoy the lot across town and if they do buy him they put him to work handing out flyers in Piccadilly Gardens. That would be super.

Other United targets – or, as we should probably call them now, ‘players City haven’t made a bid for yet’ – include Bastian Schweinsteiger and Seamus Coleman. The former is said to be up for it if only because he’ll play every week, something that is by no means a guarantee at Bayern Munich, while the latter may well be up for it too but that looks like being moot, on account of Everton not being up for it themselves. All the transfer window hinges on is people being up for it, see. Like that old MTV show presented by Eddy Temple-Morris that spawned the career of Zane Lowe.

One man not at all up for sitting on the bench at Old Trafford is Robin van Persie, and it says here that the gradually getting more handsome as he gets older Dutchman will hold CRUNCH talks with Louis van Gaal over his future. Big Louis might have to break off from those talks to take a call regarding Morgan Schneiderlin, who may or may not be signing on at Old Trafford, or Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp, who may or may not be signing a new contract with the Foxes.

The word very much around the campfire is that Nathanial Clyne will complete his move to Liverpool at some point this very day, but their summer business won’t be over there, no way no how. Obviously they never wanted Carlos Bacca anyway, and have graciously pulled out of the race for the Colombian forward, something that may or may not be linked to his imminent arrival AC Milan, so instead they’re going to give Aston Villa a bell to see if Christian Benteke is bored with the banter on offer from Tim Sherwood and fancies the more subtle comedy of Brendan Rodgers. There are only so many times you can laugh at a dirty pint or a joke about someone’s mum, after all. Also on the lookout for some more high-brow humour is Fabian Delph, whose canny fox of a Mr 15% had a clause inserted in his recently-signed contract that allows him to hop aboard the Do One bus for a mere £8million, a price Manchester City would be delighted to pay so that they can leave Delph on the bench for the next 18 months before loaning him to Sunderland.

Nobody is safe in Chelsea’s attacking midfield, it seems. To go with talk that both Mo Salah and Juan Cuadrado might be on their respective bikes after heartbreakingly brief spells at Stamford Bridge, Juventus are said to be most enamoured with Oscar and could make a bid post-haste. In response, José Mourinho will hire his latest version of the Spinal Tap drummer in the shape of Arda Turan, and hope he doesn’t spontaneously combust or die in a bizarre gardening accident.

Stewart Downing clearly hasn’t done much to impress Slaven Bilic, because the England man has been dumped somewhere on Green Street with a sign around his neck marked ‘£6million O.N.O’ – Newcastle, Leicester and Sunderland have all been spotted in the area wondering if he’s worth the dough. Elsewhere it’s Erik Lamela out, Monaco’s Yannick Ferreira Carrasco in at Tottenham, the only minor formalities on that score being finding someone to buy the former and finding an extra £8million to go with the first £8million they bid for the latter. Swansea are set to pip Bournemouth and Southampton to the signing of Braga forward Eder, but the Saints won’t let that sort of gazumping become a habit by wrapping up deals for Marseille’s Gianelli Imbula and Juventus’s Angelo Ogbonna as soon as they can.

Finally, there’s been plenty of talk around Arsenal have wrapped up a deal for Arturo Vidal from Juventus, but as it turns out that may all have stemmed from some bloke on Twitter inventing quotes from a Chilean journalist. Be safe kids, and never believe a word of what you read on the internet.

Ok so the truth is @hfeler wasn't on the radio or TV talking about Vidal to Arsenal. You lot are just so gullible and believed it.

Liverpool misfit Fabio Borini set for shock £8m West Ham transfer, medical imminent

West Ham are reportedly close to signing Liverpool forward Fabio Borini.

Olly Dawes

According to The Sun, Liverpool striker Fabio Borini is set to undergo a medical with West Ham United ahead of a move to Upton Park.

The Hammers have made three summer signings already, with Darren Randolph, Petro Obiang and Dimitri Payet all arriving so far.

New manager Slaven Bilic is now trying to make a fourth new signing, with The Sun reporting that Liverpool outcast Borini is set for a permanent move to Upton Park.

Borini, 24, has struggled to make an impact with Liverpool since arriving from Roma in 2012, scoring just three goals in 38 games in all competitions.

A ten-goal season-long loan spell with Sunderland showed what the Italian can do, and it seems that West Ham are willing to pay up to sign the former Chelsea forward permanently.

The Sun report that Borini is set to arrive in London for talks and a medical with West Ham within the next 24 hours, with a deal expected, according to the report.

Something different?

Assuming that flop Mauro Zarate leaves West Ham for good this summer, Borini could actually bring something different to the West Ham front line.

With Enner Valencia providing pace, Andy Carroll providing a target man figure and Diafra Sakho providing all-round athleticism, there is room for a more technically-gifted forward.

That's what Borini can do, in that he can drop off a front man and use the ball well, or he can play as more of a poacher inside the box. Somebody needs to turn Borini's career around, and that could well be Bilic - if the Italian forward is used correctly at West Ham.

The 25 players with a star by their name are 21 or under and have played for West Ham for two years or more so do not need to be registered in the primary 25 man squad A list. Europa allows an unlimited number of young players on the B list.

The 25 man A list squad needed to be registered with UEFA by 23rd June for the first qualifying round. West Ham have until 11th July to register further players for the second qualifying round. The club is also allowed to introduce one additional player to the A list up to 24 hours before kick off so Payet could still be a late addition to the squad.

Steven N'Zonzi holding final talks over Stoke City contract situation

According to the Stoke Sentinel, Stoke City manager Mark Hughes wants one last meeting with Potters midfielder Steven N'Zonzi in a last-ditch attempt to keep him at the club.

N'Zonzi, 26, is one of the Premier League's more underrated midfielders, and impressed under Hughes at the Britannia Stadium last season.

However, the Frenchman is out of contract in a year's time, meaning Stoke are vulnerable to losing him either on a free transfer in 2016, or for a cut-price fee this summer.

The Mirror recently reported that the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham United are considering moves to sign the former Blackburn star this summer, as they hope to lure Stoke into a sale.

Now though, the Stoke Sentinel report that Potters boss Hughes is set to meet with N'Zonzi this week in a final attempt to tempt him into staying with Stoke City.

The powerful midfielder will now have a big decision to make in the coming days, with Stoke seemingly ready to part ways with N'Zonzi if the meeting doesn't go to plan.

Aston Villa or West Ham?

Truth be told, N'Zonzi should be aiming slightly higher than Aston Villa and West Ham, but they could both offer enticing financial packages this summer.

Villa certainly need a new midfielder this summer having lost loanee Tom Cleverley to Everton, with manager Tim Sherwood no doubt desperate to replace Cleverley - and N'Zonzi would even be an upgrade over the former Manchester United midfielder.

West Ham have already signed Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang, and he is somewhat similar to N'Zonzi - so West Ham should look to invest money in other areas, which could leave Villa in pole position to land N'Zonzi's signature.

Legend Dicks joins backroom staff

West Ham United are delighted to announce that Julian Dicks has joined Slaven Bilic’s backroom staff as a full-time coaching assistant.

The Hammers legend started his new role at Chadwell Heath on Monday morning and will join a group of senior players heading to the Club’s pre-season training camp in Ireland on Tuesday.

Dicks, who became a cult hero at the Boleyn Ground during two unforgettable spells in Claret and Blue, joins the first-team coaching staff after a successful season in charge of West Ham United Ladies.

The 46-year-old told whufc.com he cannot wait to join forces with former Hammers teammate Bilic and start work with the Club’s first-team squad on a daily basis.

“To be joining the first-team coaching staff at my Club is fantastic news for me,” the four-time Hammer of the Year began. “I was with the Ladies last year and I thoroughly enjoyed that, but to get the opportunity to work with Slaven, his coaching staff and the first-team players is a dream come true.

“This is a Premier League club with some very good players already in the squad and some more very good players set to come in this summer. It is exciting times for me and exciting times for West Ham.

“I met up with Slaven last week and, although we had not met in person for a few years, it was like we had never been apart. We had a hug and a kiss and sat down and talked all about West Ham and all about football.

“We had a great relationship when we played together in the same team here and I am sure we will work well together again as manager and coach.”
We had a great relationship when we played together in the same team here and I am sure we will work well together again as manager and coach
Julian Dicks
Dicks, who scored an amazing 65 goals in 326 games from left-back, has watched his former teammate’s development as a manager closely during successful stints with the Croatia national team and Turkish club Besiktas, and is looking forward to working closely with his new boss.

“Slaven was a top player and he has gone on to become a very good manager,” confirmed The Terminator. “His teams play a high-tempo pressing game and I am sure he will instil that style of play here at West Ham.

“I have always said that the first quality that players must illustrate is hard work. If you then have very good players who work very hard, then you can achieve great things and hopefully we can do that here at West Ham.

“I understand that I will be involved on the training pitch and in the meetings and I cannot wait to get down to work with Slaven, his assistant and his other coaches.”

Dicks closed by thanking West Ham Ladies for the opportunity to manage the side last season, when he guided them to the London FA Capital Cup final and a much-improved position in the FA Women’s Premier League South.

“It would like to thank the Ladies for the chance they gave me and all the girls for the huge effort they put in last season,” he concluded.

“I have said many times that I would not have taken a similar role at any other club, but West Ham is my club and I really enjoyed the challenge.

“The Ladies have some very good players and we have already organised for some more very good players to join the club this summer, so I hope I leave them in a good position for the future.

“If this new role had not come along, I am sure I would have returned as manager this coming season, but I hope they can understand that the opportunity to work with Slaven and the first team was one that I could not turn down.”

Stoke City interested in West Ham's Stewart Downing amid Victor Moses rumours

Victor Moses appears to be attracting interest from Tottenham according to the report, so Stoke may need to find a new winger.

Stoke City are enquiring as to the demands and availability of West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing according to a report in the Stoke Sentinel.

The interest has come about because of suggestions that Tottenham are keen on landing Victor Moses from Chelsea - who was on loan at the Britannia Stadium last season.

It seems as though manager Mark Hughes has been keen on making the move for Moses a permanent one, with suggestions they would try and secure Moses as part of any deal that took goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to Chelsea - with rumours the Blues are keen to sign the Bosnian as cover for Thibaut Courtois.

The report also suggests that the Stoke boss will meet with Begovic to discuss his future, and with midfielder Steven N'Zonzi who seems to be on his way out of the Britannia Stadium. Both players have just the one year left on their contracts.

When it comes to Moses, he impressed during his time with the Potters last season, but one major concern is the number of injuries he had that disrupted his game time - and he missed around a third of the Premier League season as a result.

Downing has plenty of Premier League experience but is a different kind of player to Moses. Downing comes across as the more technical of the two while Moses appears to carry a lot more pace and power.

There is definitely a desire from Stoke, it seems, to sign a winger on a permanent deal before the start of the season but they may have their work cut out when it comes to landing either Moses or Downing.
